SEVA Walk Therapy

Some conversations are easier when you're going somewhere.

SEVA Walk Therapy is one-to-one therapeutic peer support, done by phone or Zoom while you walk outdoors. You walk where you are. We walk where we are. The conversation goes with you.

This is not a walking club. It is not a fitness program, a hiking group or a friendly chat with some fresh air. The work is serious and intentional. Walking changes the room it happens in.

For most of the people we've used it with, Walk Therapy has been the single most effective therapeutic format we've found.

We don't say that casually. We have spent years combining therapeutic conversation with walking, and we have watched what it does.

Walking does not replace skill. A bad conversation on a trail is still a bad conversation. What walking does is change the conditions. Sustained movement, time outdoors, a long unbroken conversation and two people moving in the same direction add up to an unusually productive environment for psychological work.

For the right person, it can be life-changing. We mean that.

Movement changes the conversation.

Conventional therapy usually puts two people opposite each other. In a room, or in a video window. Eye contact becomes part of the job. Silence gets loud. Everything about the setting keeps reminding you that you are in therapy.

Walking changes those conditions.

Side by side

You are moving forward, not facing off. The arrangement feels less formal and less hierarchical.

No one to stare down

You don't have to look at anyone while you say the hard thing. Your eyes can rest on the road ahead.

Silence has somewhere to go

A pause doesn't feel empty when you're both still walking. It just becomes part of the walk.

Rhythm

Steps give the conversation a pace and a continuity that a chair never will.

Room to look around

Attention can drift to the world and back again. That drift often brings a thought with it.

Not for everyone

Some people prefer a chair and a face. That's fine. Many people find this format works differently for them, and often better.

This isn't called Fair-Weather Walk Therapy.

We walk rain or shine. This isn't baseball. We don't call the session because it's raining.

Safety always comes first. If conditions are genuinely dangerous, we'll adjust. But ordinary rain, snow, cold and grey skies are not dangerous. They're just weather. We live on the west coast. If we waited for perfect days, we'd never start.

There is a principle here too. You don't need perfect conditions before you can do something worthwhile. Most of life happens on imperfect days. So does most recovery, most change and most growth.

Rain isn't a cancellation. Put on a jacket and walk.

Who it's for.

Walk Therapy isn't tied to one problem. People walk with us through difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Grief. Major life changes. Stress. Isolation. Recovery. Behavioural change. Emotional avoidance. Feeling stuck. Relationship difficulties. Or simply circumstances they need help thinking through.

You don't need to be fit, athletic or an experienced walker. The pace doesn't matter. The movement does. You need to be able to walk safely at your own comfortable pace for an hour.

It won't suit everyone. If your health, mobility, surroundings or circumstances make sustained walking unsafe, this format is not the right one for you, and we'll tell you so.
