At SEVA Recovery we do one thing. And we are exceptionally good at it.

No obnoxious therapy-speak. No declarations of powerlessness. No group hugs. Just evidence-based behavioural science, combined with lived experience, and the courage to do the work.

Our peer support is delivered one person at a time. No groups, no classrooms, no generic curriculum handed to everyone who walks through the door.

We are frequently the second or third attempt. We prefer to be the last.

Chapter 02, Why SEVA

When professionals need addiction peer support, they come to us.

We built our reputation providing addiction peer support to physicians, law enforcement, and first responders across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

SEVA Recovery now operates under the umbrella of SEVA Society, a registered nonprofit created to make this same standard of peer support available to people who might otherwise never have access to it.

Our professional clientele hasn’t gone anywhere. Many have access to exceptional healthcare and can afford anything they want. Some know considerably more about medicine, psychiatry, or neuroscience than we do.

That's fine.

They don't come to SEVA Recovery because we know more terminology. They come because we are damn good at what we do.

Capable people become exceptionally good at explaining, concealing, and managing an addiction long after it has started doing serious damage. Those explanations do not work here. We’ve heard all the bullshit before, and we don’t buy any of it. That’s why they come to SEVA.

We've lived addiction.

We've studied addiction.

We've treated addiction.

Every SEVA Peer Support Therapist is credentialed, professionally trained, insured, and has lived experience. We know what rationalization sounds like. Minimization. Bargaining. Concealment. We are not looking at this from across a desk.

If you choose group therapy and are handed the same program binder as everyone else, demand a refund. We’ll be here, ready to build a program specifically around you.

Chapter 03, The Framework

SEVA Recovery uses an integrative model organized around four principles: Schema, Education, Values, Adaptation.

i.

Schema

Long before addiction becomes visible, people develop ways of understanding themselves, pain, safety, failure, belonging, and control. Those patterns decide what feels deserved and what feels like relief.

Enough of the past to stop it dictating the present. Not a decade of examining childhood.

ii.

Education

You cannot change what you cannot recognize. We teach people to read their own thinking without turning them into amateur psychologists. Having a thought does not make it true, useful, or worth following.

Understand your own mind well enough that it becomes harder for your addiction to bullshit you.

iii.

Values

Recovery cannot stay a list of things you are trying to stop. Eventually it has to become about what you are protecting and what you are building. Family. Integrity. Health. Purpose. Freedom. The future. Figuring out what those things mean for you is part of the work.

The question stops being what am I trying to stop, and becomes who am I trying to become.

iv.

Adaptation

Understanding something is not the same as changing it. Recovery has to survive outside the room. We turn understanding into adaptive patterns of thought and behaviour, then strengthen them until reality answers before addiction can finish its argument.

Make reality the reflex.

Chapter 04, Admission

We don't work with everyone.

Money doesn't buy admission to SEVA Recovery. Status doesn't either. Neither does celebrity, a title, or a referral from someone important. The only thing that gets anyone through the door is genuine willingness to change.

If that is you, we will give you everything we have got. If it isn't, we will tell you plainly and point you toward something better suited. We would rather have the awkward conversation at the beginning than the expensive one later.

You are evaluating us. We are evaluating you. Both of those things should be true.

This work asks for honesty, reflection, challenging conversations, and learning to sit with uncomfortable emotions. We do not manufacture discomfort. We also do not treat avoidance as self-care.

Chapter 05, The Programs

Two programs. Four weeks. One person at a time.

  1. SEVA Recovery Substance Addiction Intensive

Alcohol and drugs. Private, intensive, one to one. For people who have run out of patience with their own explanations.

    Read the program
  2. SEVA Recovery Behavioural Addiction Intensive

Compulsive behaviour that continues despite real harm to relationships, health, responsibilities, and self-respect. Same framework, different terrain.

    Read the program

Both run on the same framework and follow the same arc: understand, recognize, respond, adapt. Follow-up at thirty, sixty, and ninety days.

Both intensives

Chapter 06, The Position

On honesty

We will not bullshit you. We will not help you bullshit yourself. We expect the same in return.

On what clients need

They don't need someone to be impressed by them. They need someone who isn't fooled by their addiction.

On compassion

We know how frightening and humiliating it can feel to admit we have a serious problem. That does not oblige us to agree with you about why it continues.

On what we are not

Not twelve-step. Not a retreat. Not group therapy. Not spiritual, and not religious. One person, one Peer Support Therapist, four weeks, and work that is expected to get done.

Chapter 07, The Door

Talk to us.

Your name, an email, a phone number, and a short note about what you are dealing with. We will get back to you within twenty-four hours. If we take you on, it is because we believe you can do this. We will expect you to believe it too.
